Walter Grey & Co.
1889 - 1895
Walter (Watty) Grey operated an aerated water factory in Auckland before shifting to Wellington to purchase Strike & Hamilton's aerated water business. His new company was established in July 1889 and was known as the Phoenix Cordial Factory. It was located in Old Customhouse St. in July 1889 but shifted to Cornhill Street in 1892.
Two different Walter Grey bottles are known to exist, a 6oz and 10oz Codd patent (marble bottle) made by Cannington Shaw & Coy, St. Helens, Lancashire. Grey mentioned in January 1892 these bottles were "very strong and nice clear bottle".
This business gained a high reputation for the quality of the products manufactured there but after the cessation of the company the concern was allowed to get "somewhat out of condition". In January 1895 it was purchased by Mr. Maurice Samuel to become The Phoenix Aerated Water Company - known in the earliest days by one publication as Samuel & Co.
