William F. Strike

1880 - 1885
In 1875 William Frederick Strike was a brewer in Murray Street, Greymouth. Later the same year, he joined an alliance with his brother, George and Jas. Blackmore to form 'Strike and Blackmore', in Mount Street, Greymouth.

By 1878 William Strike was operating from Omotumotu Road in Greymouth, and George had moved to Wellington. William followed his brother to Wellington shortly afterwards and 'Strike Brothers' (William Frederick and George Arthur) formed on 24th September 1878 when a partnership between George Strike and George Saunders (Strike Saunders & Co.) was dissolved. Their factory was located on Argyle Street.

Mills purchased the bankrupt Strike estate, George Strike was retained as manager of the new firm, 'G.A. Strike & Co.' and William Strike was left to re-establish business on his own account. He set up the 'Crown Brewery' in Wordsworth Street (now lower Aro Street). An advertisement in the 1882 'Bishops Illustrated Guide' describes William Strike at this location as being a brewer, bottler & aerated water and cordial manufacturer.

In 1884 William Strike moved to Dixon Street and by April 1885 W.F. Strike and A. Hamilton were operating the Polhill Brewery and aerated water manufactory in Mitchelltown (Holloway Road).

It appears William Strike died in early 1888 and the factory remained empty until being bought by Butement in 1889, some 18 months after Strike's death.
