Strike Goulding & Co.
1865 - 1866
Strike Goulding & Co. was the first of many 'Strike' companies to operate in Wellington, and the first of a string of small companies which ultimately formed the foundation of Thomson & Lewis some thirty years later.
The Strike Goulding & Co. factory was located at the corner of Herbert and Dixon Streets. In 1865 they advertised in the 'Wellington Almanac' as:-
Aerated Water & Cordial Manufacturers
& English Ale & Porter Bottlers.
When the West Coast gold discovery news broke in the mid-sixties, the Strike Goulding & Co. business dissolved and John Strike travelled to the West Coast to make his fortune.
e established Strike & Co., a brewery in Charleston, half way between Westport and Greymouth, while Mr. C. R. Goulding remained in Wellington and continued trading under his own name for several months until selling the business to William Smith & Co. It is thought Goulding then moved to Australia.
To date, no Strike Goulding & Co. bottles have been found, suggesting paper labels were used on their bottles.
No user-marked bottles from this company are known to exist.
