Even though J. McIlraith & Co. was primarily a manufacturer of beer, the business was listed in the 'Stone's Directory' as aerated water manufacturers from 1928 to 1942, and again in the 1948, 1951 and 1957 editions.

In the 1951 'New Zealand Business Who's Who' it was stated the company was established in 1897 as a wine and spirits merchant.

J. McIlraith & Co. operated from 142 Willis Street and sold aerated water in crown top bottles and a clear soda syphon.
